Da Qing was stood surrounded by hills and a figure was coming towards him. Yunlan though he looked different with long hair, old fashioned clothes. Then again Da Qing himself had long hair and odd clothes. There's another figure in sat behind Yunlan but Da Qing can't see clearly, his eyes are fixed on the man walking towards him.

"You are a cat at the top of the food chain." He closed the distance and pointed at Da Qing's chest. "If you still act like this, I won't want you anymore."

"But I..." Da Qing's voice was sad, he looked down at the ground and stepped away. "I will miss you." Yunlan laughed, a sad sounding laugh and stepped towards him once more, to put a hand on his shoulder, companionably.

"Da Qing..." Da Qing looked back up at him. "One day you will find the person you want to follow and protect. Whether human or cat. Love is what makes us greater. You will understand it then." He smiled softly.

Da Qing looked at him imploringly. "Then we will meet again?"

Yunlan made a face, spreading his arms out like it was obvious. "Of course. I'm your master for your whole life. Whether now or in the future." A dramatic finger point punctuated his words, which made Da Qing smile.

Da Qing reached into his clothes and brought out a chain with a set of bells. Bells that he was to keep until he met his desired master, so he could give them to him.

Da Qing had found his person. He stared at the bells in his hand a moment and then back at the man in front of him, back at the bells and then slowly he held them out, slowly, as an offering.

"It's for you." Yunlan took them, just as carefully, holding the chain gently and studying it a moment before smiling once more. He undid the clasp and stepped forward, fastening them around Da Qing's neck, he made sure they sat right as Da Qing looked down at the bells. Then he stepped back with a brighter smile and put his hand on Da Qing's shoulder once more.

"You keep it." Da Qing held the bells between his fingers, smiling himself as he met Yunlan's eyes.

The dream faded.

History:

A very long time ago a crippled space arc crashed into the planet of Haixing. The aliens on the ship found ways to adapt to their new planet. Some mutated powers and went to live in the underground kingdom of Dixing. Others found ways to combine their genes with animals and plants, called the Yashou they remained on the surface but kept themselves apart and hidden from humans.

All was well for generations, the three races keeping to themselves but sharing the planet peacefully. Then a meteor smashed into the planet, depleting resources. This forced many Dixing people up to the surface and whilst some attempted to trade and share resources with the humans a rebel faction sought to use their superior powers to rule and take the resources for themselves. Out of the fragments of this meteor the leaders of the alliance made four artefacts called Hallows.

At this time there lived a cat called Da Qing. One of the Yashou tribe. We don’t know anything about his early life but as a teenager/young adult he was working for the alliance mostly as a messenger runner in the war against the rebel Dixing peoples. During this time he accidentally touched one of the Hallows and it changed him, making him immortal- he can still be killed but he stopped ageing and won’t die by natural causes.

He was given a task by Ma Gui and Fu Yuo, the leaders of the alliance, to go and find a war leader named Kun Lun. He was given a drawing of a man with strange short hair and a message to give him. He found him, an injured man with strange hair and clothes. Stranger still Kun Lun greeted him familiarly, called him by name and touched his hair and clothes. When Da Qing asked how he knew his name Kun Lun told him he was Da Qing’s master, of course he knew his name. That and everything else Kun Lun said in the subsequent conversation made no sense whatsoever. But Da Qing passed on his message and took him back to the headquarters.

Kun Lun soon proved himself to be everything they had hoped him to be, a good leader and a great person. When the warlord of the rebels declared war Da Qing ran to tell Kun Lun and Shen Wei who declared they would bring back the Hollows. Kun Lun told Da Qing to go and hide and when Da Qing refused, after all cats are the top of the food chain, Kun Lun told him he was young, that he was his master and to do as he was told. Da Qing was even more confused but hid as Kun Lun and Shen Wei reclaimed the hollows.

He did not go far and was close enough to overhear Kun Lun telling Shen Wei that he would be leaving. Da Qing was upset that Kun Lun was leaving and Kun Lun told him to be more mature to remember he was top of the food chain. He told him that one day he would meet someone he wanted to follow and protect and the most important thing for a human or a cat was to follow their heart.

Lady Fu Yuo, the leader of the Yashou people had given Da Qing a necklace with a pair of bells on it, telling him that when he found the person he wanted to follow he should give it to them. At the time Da Qing had scoffed, claiming himself a free cat. But he had kept the bells and now he knew that he should give them to Kun Lun. Kun Lun fastened the necklace around Da Qing’s neck and told him to keep them.

Ye Zun attacked and Da Qing grabbed the hollows to protect them as Wei Shun and Kun Lun fought. With both of them knocked to the ground Da Qing ran in to protect them and was blasted with powers and knocked unconscious, dropping the box of hallows which activated them.

When he woke up it was with no recollection of the past few days. But as the Yashou people got ready to retreat back into the wilds Da Qing told lady Fu Yuo that he was going to go and travel. He couldn’t remember what had happened but he had the bells round his neck and knew that if he had allowed someone to put them there they were a person he wanted to follow and he was determined to search for them.

And search he did for 10000 years. His memories returned eventually. He stayed involved in the affairs of Haixing and the emerging Dragon City, working for them on and off throughout the centuries. He spent time with the Yashou tribes as well but as those he knew in his life passed on he became more of a solitary cat.

The only solid thing we know is that he met Da Ji, another of the rare Cat Yashou. They were friends even if she acted childish sometimes and annoying. During an argument Da Qing walked out onto a road and Da Ji jumped to save him from a car, she was hit instead and died.

He joined the S.I.D not long after that when Yunlan’s father was chief. He did shadowing work and proved useful in having an informant network of stray cats. While he wasn’t at work he lived, in cat form, with an elderly homeless man named Li who fed him and enjoyed his companionship.

Yunlan took over as chief. Da Qing recognised him of course. He was younger than when they met but it was Kun Lun. He knew enough to know that Yunlan had no knowledge of anything and so stayed quiet. He became deputy of the S.I.D. One day Li woke early when Da Qing was in his human form. He panicked, believing Da Qing to be some kind of monster and attacked him, causing Da Qing to lose all his memories.

Da Qing stumbled back to S.I.D headquarters having forgotten most of his history. Another ten years past, Da Qing lived with Yunlan and worked for the S.I.D as the team began to be put together. Yunlan filled the department with interesting people and Da Qing befriended them all.

There were a spate of strange crimes and murders centred around Dragon City university. During one the first investigation Guo, their newest recruit, fell from a window ledge. A professor named Shen Wei helped him. Something was strange about him and it soon became obvious that he was suspicious, he seemed too involved and had knowledge that most humans did not. Eventually as they began finding the four Hallows they also learned Shen Wei’s secret. He was a very powerful Dixing official, the Black Cloaked Emissary who arrested those Dixing people who abused their powers on the surface.

They were told of a surprise inspection just as Yunlan announced he was going to Dixing on a mission. The team decided to pretend everything was fine and even have Guo stand in for Zhao Yunlan. This backfired when the inspector was no other than Yunlan’s father. They ended up with a case and Zhao (the father) took over the department. During the investigation he asked Da Qing to go and ask the local cats what they had seen and was surprised to hear Da Qing claim to not speak cat. Da Qing realised it was something he had forgotten how to do.

After a fight with Ye Zun Zhao Yunlan returned to the S.I.D headquarters without sight. The team recorded messages for him which Da Qing took to the hospital when he went to escort. Yunlan home. Zhu Hong had read a book out loud called Ancient Mysteries and in it was mentioned the Master of the Mountains, Kun Lun. At the name Da Qing had the feeling that in his lost memories was something really important. He tried to remember and ended up with a splitting headache. Yunlan left him in the care of a nurse who offered hypnotism in an attempt to help him remember as he was continuously forgetting more and more.

The first session went well but his memories were not pleasant. He remembered calling for Kun Lun and seeing Shen Wei cloaked in white, he had the feeling of fear. He was woken and raced to find Yunlan, more frantic as he learned that Yunlan (now healed) and Shen Wei were planning to go to Dixing again. He caught up with them, ready to confront Shen Wei and got agitated when Yunlan told him to go home and look after the house. He jumped through the portal with them.

In Dixing he told Yunlan what he had remembered and offered to shadow Shen Wei to see what he was still holding from them. He overheard him talking to Ye Zun, who was imprisoned in a rock. A strange figure attacked him and Shen Wei saved him. Da Qing realised Shen Wei had known he was there all along. Shen Wei told him there were things he could not say but promised that he would never harm Yunlan. That he believed in protecting his heart. Da Qing asked him to pinky promise and told him if he lied to him he would never forgive him.

They solved the case of the traitor in Dixing and returned to the surface. Whilst investigating a woman who may have returned from the dead Da Qing went undercover. He met the woman, Da Ji who after a dinner declared he should know her and then attacked him when he couldn’t remember. Yunlan came to his rescue and she attacked him instead, Shen Wei attacked her and killed her.

Da Qing was upset but forgave Shen Wei as he understood he was protecting Yunlan. Da Ji woke from the dead (cats have nine lives) and hit Da Qing, knocking him out. Later after he had another hypnotherapy session he met Da Ji again and she jogged his memory, he remembered her first death, being hit by the car. It turned out she had been killed more times since then. He took her to the SID headquarters and explained who she was. When Li came outside she started yelling at him and said it was not a good place before she knocked Da Qing out again and dragged him off. She helped him remember the alley where Li had attacked him and continued to drag him around as his team searched for him.

Eventually Li found them, Da Ji tried to attack him but Da Qing shielded him and was knocked out again. This time he gained the last of his memories. He declared that he wanted to stay in SID and him and Da Ji parted on good terms, he thanked Shen Wei for not arresting her (he had no jurisdiction over Yashou anyways) and Shen Wei took him to where everyone was closing in on the master of the Merit Brush (the third Hallow)

They took the Merit Brush. However it was too late, Ye Zun’s plan was already in action.

On top of that they learned that Lin Jing, scientist, friend and most importantly (in Da Qing’s opinion) provider of popcorn, was a traitor. Zhao Yunlan kicked him out and Da Qing began to see their unit fall apart. Leaks about the SID turned public attention against them and soon the government had warrants out for their arrest. Everyone scattered. Da Qing tried to round everyone up and was successful in finding Shen Wei. They raced back to headquarters as the Hallows activated pulling Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei through a wormhole.

Da Qing tried to take the hallows but their power stopped him, zapping him away. Government officials invaded the lab and he hid in cat form. Two days later Yunlan and Shen Wei returned. Everyone (who were still alive) back together they returned to the headquarters to find Li dying, discovered that Guo now had a mutation, found the final Hallow in a storage box and received an ‘If you are seeing this I’m dead’ message from Lin with important footage of his final moments.

Da Qing, Zhu Hong and Yunlan went to the Yashou tribes, Hong became chief, they found the secret passage to Dixing, opened a communication channel that went back in time 10000 years and allowed them to tell Ma Gui and Fu Yuo what was about to happen. Yunaln went to Dixing with Guo. Da Qing stayed to defend the Yashou tribes against the Dixing invasion. He returned to the city where he met with Da Ji. They were attacked by Dixingians. Da Qing fought to free Da Ji but was too late, she had used up her last life and died in his arms.

A vision was shown in the sky some time later of Yunlan, beaten and bloodied. With Ye Zun gloating. Zhao’s father (or rather Zhang Shi: the Dixing entity that shared his body) opened the portal again and Da Qing, Chu and Hong travelled through to Dixing.

Light burst in the air and they recognised it as dark energy and something else, something they recognised as from Guo. They ran to confront Ye Zun and a fight ensued. Da Qing flung himself over Zhao Yunlan. Before he had travelled to Dixing Zhang Shi had given him a needle of serum that enhanced powers (with a kick out of death). Da Qing took the needle out, planning to use it. Yunlan wrestled it out of his hands and used it instead despite Da Qing’s protests. Da Qing flung himself at Ye Zun again and is tossed to the side. That is canon point.

Personality:

Da Qing is a 10,000 year old fat cat whose favourite activities include eating (dried fish snacks are the best) and sleeping. He is very lazy. If work is boring or not essential right now it can probably wait. He has even been known to fall asleep on the job, whilst shadowing and staking out a building. His main motivation in life is fish and he can be motivated to do most things with the promise of food, even if he complains about it.

However he is a decent deputy of the Special Investigatory Department (S.I.D) when he puts his mind to it. Whilst on an investigation he pulls his weight and it is noticeable that as the situation gets more serious so does he. Once his friends and Yunlan are in danger he becomes focussed. The lazy, complaining cat changed into one determined to protect those he cares about.

Even in human form his body language and habits are very cat like. He perches on furniture or sprawls on it taking up all the room. He has the curiosity of a cat and is always touching things, fiddling with items (accidentally touching holy artefacts that granted him eternal life…). When he fights it is with claws, scratching and pouncing. Though he technically lives with Yunlan there are many times he is not home, he wanders where he pleases and crashes at work or in the company of whoever is around.

He has the arrogance of a cat. Cats are the top of the food chain and he is the king of cats. Therefore he is better than all the other animals and the humans as well and everyone should know it. Despite his words Da Qing is not actually that strong. He will often choose to hide rather than fight. When he fights he is quite easy to take down, he gets knocked out a lot. But still cats are the best.

Da Qing can also lack empathy. A lot of this comes down to him being so long lived.. He is very practical when it comes to matters of life and death. People die. It’s sad but you move on. There is no use hoping or wishing for it to be different. Sometimes this can lead to trouble, like when he told a man whose wife was missing that there was very little chance of finding her and then muttered about humans being fragile when the man got upset. That’s not to say however that Da Qing is heartless or lacks the ability to care about others. When he loses people he mourns, howls and cries but once he has mourned he moves on. It is a simple thing, cats and people die all the time but you have to keep living.

Da Qing is very easy going. He is friendly though he doesn’t suffer fools lightly. He dislikes Guo at first because he sees him as a wimp and though he only stops complaining about him because Zhao tells him to he quickly comes to like the boy in his own way. Explaining things to him and it is not long before Guo has been added to the S.I.D family. With his friends he is casual and teasing. He steals their food, teases them about their crushes and cajoles them when they are being lazy trash fire work kids, as if he is any better. It’s clear he cares for them all deeply though and would do anything for them.

With strangers he is polite but still friendly. He has a tendency to talk a lot around those he knows well but is a little more reserved whilst out in public, partially because he has to keep the fact he is a cat secret from the general public. He is however a decent actor when he needs to be, on undercover investigations and such. Yunlan tells Shen Wei not to underestimate him, that he’s ‘very good at pretending.’

He is also perfectly capable of respect, despite how he acts around Zhao and the rest of the S.I.D. He is always respectful around the Black Cloaked Emissary, even when he learns that he is Shen Wei. Even with Zhao he knows where the line is- where driving his chief crazy is going to lead into angering him and he does his best not to cross it. He is unafraid to question him and call him out though, going as far as to interrupt whilst Zhao is yelling at Chu and openly questioning why he trusts Shen Wei so much. He doesn’t let Zhao’s temper faze him in any way and never takes things to heart that are said in a blaze of temper. He is very good natured and when he gets angry it burns out fast. He forgives easily and is not one to hold a grudge. Violence is never his instinct and every time we see him hurt another it is in direct response to a friend being hurt.

Da Qing is the deputy of the S.I.D and though he is good at what he does leadership does not come naturally. He can give instructions in tense situations, telling people to hide or gathering people up to follow a new lead but he is not a natural leader. This is most obvious during the time they are inspected by Yunlan’s father whilst Yunlan is in Dixing. Though he speaks for the group in defending Yunlan he doesn’t step up into any sort of command role when the job none of them were expecting comes through.

Da Qing is extremely loyal. Despite his teasing, his laziness and his insistence that terms of friendship definitely should include a steady supply of fish. When he woke from the battle 10000 years in the past he searched the world for whoever had put the bells around his neck, because he knew that if he had allowed someone to do so then they were the person he wished to follow with all his heart. He searched for 10000 years for Kun Lun, finding him and sticking with him despite losing his memories more than once. He can be very earnest- he makes Shen Wei, the Black Cloaked Emissary and one of the most important figures in Dixing pinky swear that he will not harm Yunlan. He declares to Da Ji that his place is in the S.I.D and that despite them being lazy and strange he cares for them all and wants to be part of them.


Mostly though he is just a lazy cat. His friendship can be bought with fish. (Fish can also rouse him from being knocked out, calm him when he has gone feral due to mind control and motivate him to do just about anything.). He will complain and eat all your snacks but he is a good cat to have around when things get tough!

Abilities:

Cat Shape shifter

Da Qing is a cat Yashou which means he has a human form and an animal form which he can shift between at will. He can talk in both forms (he can also meow in both forms). He cannot however communicate in cat language (as apparently that is linked to memory...)

No matter the form he has cat like hearing and the ability to identify things by their smell. His fingers can essentially be claws when he attacks with them (at least, they are sharp enough to leave claw marks in a tree).

Investigatory skills

Da Qing is a trained detective with skills in shadowing (helped by the fact he can be a cat). He knows how to question witnesses and how to obtain evidence from a crime scene.

God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Mostly because he would be a pretty awful god despite his self given title of King of Cats. He would however actually be a good Shinki. He is good at following someone else’s lead but also would not be afraid to call his god out if he thought he was doing something dangerous or stupid.
